Are You With Me Tonight

Deep beneath an over grown pine tree
lies the grave stone of the best friend I've had
after all of these years it still brings me to tears
and tonight, as I drink, I'm so sad

walking home from the bar he was hit by car
on a night when it was too dark to see
a tire screatch was the sound as he fell to the ground
I'm left to wonder why him and not me?

And it's ninety-four steps
from barstool to headstone
I count every time I get tight
and as I stumble on my way
I hear a voice softly say
"old buddy, are you with me tonight?"

It was ten years today when I lost him that way
and I know that I'll never be the same
if we hadn't gotten so wound
if I had bought one less round
I always wonder if I was to blame

now I sit here tonight and I feel that same fright
as I drink at the very same bar
and it's too late to talk so I'll go for a walk
but I know that it won't be too far

'cuz it's ninety-four steps
from barstool to headstone
I count every time I get tight
and as I stumble on my way
I hear a voice softly say
"old buddy, are you with me tonight?"
